Anti-War Voices // Blog 4

What Happened to the Global Anti-War Movement? | Common Dreams Views

After browsing two websites (antiwar.com and theamericanconservative.com) its become more relevant that strong Anti-War voices are not heard or spoken on mainstream news nearly as much. It makes me wonder why we never talk about anti-war more in present day. These news websites promote news thats not seen or spoken about on channels such as Fox or CBS. There are a couple main reasons why I believe that anti-war is not spoken about nearly as much today, especially given all the new ways to post and share media.

One, the United States is currently at war with our enemies. We've been fighting this war since 2001 when ISIS performed deadly acts of terrorism on our country. These acts of terrorism have never been taken lightly, so being at war with the country who put so much hurt and death on our country seems like more of a logical reason. American troops have been stationed overseas for over a decade and are still fighting for the freedom and protection of our country. But still, being anti-war wouldn't we talk more about wanting this war to end? I find war very interesting and have always enjoyed learning about it. I remember when I was in middle school, we learned about people who would protest for world peace and strongly disliked the idea of war. But today, we don't hear about it as much.

Second, today we have the choice of whether or not we want to serve in the army. Back when anti-war was more popular, many men were drafted into the military, whether they wanted to serve or not. Many people who knew of somebody or was one of the people who was drafted unwillingly were probably very upset about the war and wanted it to end so they didn't have to serve any more. Because people today have the option to join the Army, Navy or Air Force people aren't as concerned if they will be drafted and have their lives uprooted as they were back when.

Lastly, the third reason why anti-war voices aren't heard as regularly anymore is because there are so many different forms of media and ways to share news. People can choose directly where they want to hear current events from, and if they don't agree or necessary like what is being discussed, they can change the channel or unfollow that source. When anti-war was more popular there were limited forms of media and people were forced to hear what was being discussed. Anti-war was a major topic and many people were hearing about it. Because today it isn't being reported, and you have the option of what media you want to hear about, anti war isn't as popular.

Whether you are in favor of our country being at war or not, the anti-war movement has defiantly calmed down and isn't talked about as much anymore. The United States is currently at war fighting for our country against terrorism and many people do believe that this war needs to be fought. Women today, especially men, also have the option whether they want to be in the Military or not. They aren't being drafted and so the war does not affect nearly as many people as it did when anit-war was more prevalent. Lastly, because of more news media, people can chose to hear about the war or not. If the war does not interest you or affect you personally, hearing about war and anti-war voices wont be something many people will care or want to hear about.
