8 values of Free Expression // Key Post

Image
In class there was a discussion of the 8 values of free expression. These speech theories include the marketplace of free ideas, participation in  self-government, stable change, individual self-fulfillment, check on governmental power, promote tolerance, promote innovation and lastly protect dissent. From my understanding, all of these values are how we understand and utilize our right to free speech or the first amendment.      The question of which one resonates the most with me is "promote innovation." Promoting innovation is "a community in which free speech is values and protected is like to be a more energized, creative, interesting society as its citizens actively  fulfill themselves in many diverse and interesting ways." I personally resonate with this value of free expression because I really agree with constantly growing and evolving as a person, and as a society. If you are not growing and learning new things, nothing is ever going to improve! If we

First Amendment Rights and Black Lives Matter Protests // Blog 3

The black lives matter movement has been going on since nearly May, when George Floyd was killed in an act during police brutality. People all around the world held protests to show their support for Black Lives Matter and since then, the news has been on the front lines reporting on everything that’s been going on. One major thing to keep in mind when talking about the Black Lives Matter protests is the First Amendment and the rights that protect our six freedoms. Recent news I found on Black Lives Matter is mainly focused on numbers and precents focusing on support for the campaigns. However, one recent article from August 21 titles “Police Response to Press at Black Lives Matter Protests Test First Amendment.” This article discusses how police are responding to the press at the protests held by Black Lives Matter supporters. In this article, it describes how many journalists were tear gasses, hit by rubber bullets and even detained. The press showed identification that they were ind

The Supreme Court Before starting to describe the Supreme Court, it's important to understand the role of the judicial branch of government. The judicial branch is in charge of interpreting the laws and deciding whether or not those laws are constitutional. The Supreme Court is part of the judicial branch as the highest federal court in the country. Established in 1789, the Supreme Court is made up of 9 justices that serve for life. As part of our governments check and balance system, the Supreme Court checks out the executive (president) branch and the legislative (congress) branch.  The Supreme Court was established in article 3 of the constitution. Article 3 of the C onstitution reads...  " The judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish. The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour, and shall, at stated

In this day and age keeping up with news and media trends is crucial, especially during a nationwide pandemic. There are many different websites and news sources that I enjoy using to keep myself up to date. I have found that these easy to access sources provide me with exactly what I am looking for, and that they are truthful and reliable. Although I don't necessarily check these news outlets daily, I do look to them when searching for breaking news, and when I have a moment to read or watch their posts.  1.       Fox News The first news source that I would recommend using is Fox News. I grew up watching Fox News with my family, so I have always just turned to them when I need information on politics and current events in our government. Personally, I share a lot of the same beliefs that Fox News covers, so it is way more enjoyable for me to watch. By watching a source that shares a common set of beliefs and values, I find it easier to trust the source and connect with it.
